Spring Learning: When a Pet Needs Help Giving Birth

This spring, Dr. Liu, our board-certified Emergency and Critical Care Specialist, returned to the UCI Children’s Center and Extended Day Care to teach toddlers and young elementary school children about a medical condition that can affect both people and our beloved pets.

Through storytelling, the children learned about an adorable pregnant Chihuahua who was having difficulty giving birth. They were encouraged to ask questions about pregnancy, caring for a pregnant pet, and when it is important to seek veterinary medical help.

The children also had the special opportunity to learn how newborn puppies are assessed and cared for after birth. There were so many thoughtful questions—and everyone was happy and relieved to see the mother dog and her puppies doing well after receiving medical care and guidance at the hospital.

It was another wonderful day of learning, curiosity, and compassion.

At Life Animal Blood Center Charity, we believe that teaching children how pets can experience medical conditions similar to those faced by people helps build empathy, compassion, and a lifelong appreciation for animal health.
